Why Reid Traditional Is the Original Traditional Education

What is traditional education? Traditional education is a style of teaching that emphasizes long-established customs and curricula that are seen as “traditional.” This style of education reinforces a “back-to-basics” curriculum and a student culture that’s geared towards academic success, high levels of student accountability, and close parent involvement in their child’s education.

Traditional education is what we at Reid Traditional Schools founded our charter schools on, back in 1995. Since our founding in 1995, we’ve developed a classics-driven, teacher and parent-led educational program that emphasizes achievement, respect, and accountability. We offer an Advanced Curriculum

True to one of the founding principles of traditional education, Reid Traditional Schools is proud to offer an advanced, standardized curriculum. This unique curriculum separates Reid Traditional Schools from other institutions, in that it allows us to provide a higher standard of education and development for all of our students.

Our courses in language arts, mathematics, science, and geography are advanced and use proven teaching frameworks to help students excel beyond their peers at other schools. Our language arts curriculum, for example, begins with Spalding phonics, and progresses to the Spalding Writing Road to Reading, culminating in lessons in Greek and Latin word roots. Critical thinking and creative writing are emphasized at every level of education, as are proper spelling, grammar, and usage.

Math, science, and geography courses follow similar patterns and provide a robust educational experience to students.

We Use Traditional Teaching Methods

While traditional teaching methods are effective for imparting knowledge, they also teach students respect, patience, and discipline. In a traditional classroom, teachers are in charge, and they lead the educational discourse — not the students. Traditional teaching methods teach students to respect their teacher’s authority, as well as the teacher’s understanding of the subject matter. Additionally, classrooms in a traditional setting are highly structured, meaning there is a clear hierarchy of authority, with faculty at the top. This effective teaching method drastically reduces in-classroom distractions or disciplinary issues and teaches students to respect one another.

Our Entire School is Built Around Academic Achievement

We place tremendous emphasis on early achievement in a student’s academic life — evidenced by our focused phonics system, structured math program, robust science education curriculum, and social studies courses that relate to our literature arts program. Our focus on academic achievement pushes our faculty and staff to provide a world-class traditional education experience. Since our inception in 1995, we’ve garnered numerous awards for the efficacy of our program, including the National Blue Ribbon School Award, and multiple awards for “Best Charter Middle School” in the Phoenix area.

We Provide a Safe and Positive Learning Environment

Reid Traditional Schools has a zero-tolerance policy for violence or substance abuse, and a strong stance on student discipline is enforced by all of our faculty and staff — as a team. In addition to our basic disciplinary standards, we also take a strong stance against violence and substance abuse. We also enforce a dress code so as to promote unity within our classrooms and instill a sense of belonging within our students.

Our commitment to student health and safety is a driving force in everything we do. Reid Traditional Schools maintain health offices on our campuses, and we employ qualified healthcare professionals for our students. Faculty, staff, and administrators all have training in CPR and the use of defibrillators.

We Give Parents a Voice

Unlike other schools, at Reid Traditional Schools, parents have a definitive voice in operations and policies. We encourage parents to participate in and to express their opinions through our parent organizations. We make it easy to participate with on-campus volunteer spaces that include room for younger siblings to play. Have questions? We Focus on Building a Solid Foundation

At Reid Traditional Schools, we place specific emphasis on not just meeting state standards but exceeding them. Parents won’t have to worry about students failing to meet state-mandated benchmarks, nor will they question whether or not their children are learning “the right stuff.” Reid Traditional Schools’ back-to-basics education style ensures that students will meet all of their educational requirements, and have the skills, socialization, and expertise to succeed outside of our schools.

Traditional education is founded on the belief that a curriculum that emphasizes essential principles in all subject areas can make all the difference in a student’s life. Reid Traditional Schools is Arizona’s original traditional charter school, taking the principles of education that have served students for centuries, and applying them in a modern setting, in an environment that doesn’t just encourage academic success but is defined by it.
